THIS ONE THING 2020 GOT RIGHT

The debut of #QUEENLEIAMUSIC is a creative passion project that I've been incubating in my imagination and soul for many moons.

Over decades, Divine Spirit has blessed me with a precious songbook of harmonies and lyrics. By messages in dreams, through prayerful inspiration, and while minding my business at home, I've received these songs and poured the music onto pages of my journals. 

Several times, I made attempts to step forward and share this music. Yet, the timing and circumstances never fully came together. And my journals remained neatly tucked away. 

THEN THERE WAS 2020. 

In March 2020, I received an urgent phone call from my Mother informing me that the Sankofa Gardens campus (Shreveport, Louisiana) was ablaze! Over ten years from 2005 to 2015, our North Louisiana community and national allies had joined forces to envision and organize a vibrant community garden, summer youth programming  (Sankofa Saturday School), and multiple visionary cultural + arts + grasroots economic development initiatives on the land.

In a dramatic outpouring of fire and smoke, one of the campus properties was lost within minutes - and my earnest intentions to revive leadership for expanding Sankofa Gardens in the spring/summer turned to ash.

Not even three weeks following the devastation of fire, life dramatically changed for us all. News of the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping across the planet forced people to retreat home and remain indoors indefinitefly for the safety.

Within the early weeks of quarantine, I  heightened my attention to the critical matters of staying prayed-up, securing my family, and coalescing with community locally and online. I also stayed close to my Ancestor altar, seeking to receive and understand the wisdom of the Old People who had seen the worse in their days, survived, and thrived to tell about it!

 

With the spacious opportunity of working from home, I enjoyed time for tending to household tasks. I found new pleasure in cooking nourishing family meals. I rallied my sons to plant a vegetable garden in the yard. I practiced homeschooling and began practicing a simpler lifestyle. 

By summertime, grave issues of police abuses and social injustices against people of Color reached a boiling point with the murders of George Floyd, Breyonna Taylor, and other lives. This #BlackLivesMatter became the rallying cry among people around the world. Meanwhile, the viral cancer of racism was flagrantly paraded in the White House, while good people organized to topple Confederate monuments and mindsets.

I picked up my songbook and decided  - IT'S MY TIME TO SING!

I reasoned what better time than NOW - while the world is turning upside down - to share a healing message of songs. I surrendered judging my voice and comparing mySelf to yall "real" singers (LOL). Then, after making a few calls and counting my dollars to invest in this project, I got to work creating music in the studio - and truly enjoyed the process!

I sincerely appreciate Mr. Brent Latin, CEO of Young Pros Entertainment for his professional guidance and collaboration to help bring GOD IS IN THE BREEZE to life! His musicianship and production saavy are excellent!

Looking forward, I count it a blessing that I am here to tell my story of 2020. GOD IS IN THE BREEZE comes forward to help me fulfill two Divine assignemts: 1) To share these Universal Love Songs with the world; and 2) to get serious about the business of leading the restoration and expansion of Sankofa Gardens in Shreveport, Louisiana. This land is dedicated to hope that comes through wholistically healing of body, mind, and spirit!

Please know that when you are supporting #QUEENLEIAMUSIC, the funds generated from this project are being reinvested into a multitude of projects and enlisting hands-on people power and services at Sankofa Gardens.
